This quote is quite a catch (pun pun) and I really didn't think about it in Spiritual terms until I referenced it the other day to a friend. The proverb was coined by Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie in her novel, Mrs. Dymond.
It goes... "He certainly doesn't practise his precepts, but I suppose the patron meant that if you give a man a fish he is hungry again in an hour; if you teach him to catch a fish you do him a good turn." I love this as a metaphor for how we attempt to fool others with what we're doing or who we are, and I mean, you can fool others sure, for a while, but on the other hand we're never fooling ourselves. We're just in pain. For example. So many people I meet who are advocates for the understanding and fundamental premise that we create our own reality will want to present that they've got the art of it nailed when it is not the case, in fact there is perplexity and confusion dominating their minds in vicious patterns of reappearance as to how and why they're getting what they're getting and conversely why they are not getting what they want to be getting. It's like saying they know how to fish and life... calling their bluff. And it will. Not because they bluff but because you really want to learn how! And you cannot learn how when you settle in bubble of denial. It crumbles. And I'm not saying that there aren't people who know how to fish in this sense, surely there are! This is to help people relinquish their facade and to step into a place of honesty and nailing from that approach the art of fishing, or the art of alignment. This way when sharing their knowledge with others, or in their personal demonstration, it doesn't look so flippant and unclear which only denotes confusion that then gets a smile slapped onto it and not much more than a topical display of success for fear of being "exposed"... well that sucks! Personally, I like honing deep resonance with my true being and watching that alignment reverberate out into my reality and come back with equally deep and delicious demonstration. I'm sure we all want that. I do. Don't you? This is the leading edge I'm talking about and if you're not used to being there, fishing so to speak, it's tiring and lacking in results for you, ie your catch and subsequent sustenance/satisfaction with life. Most people will begin to show resistance and become defensive when someone who does fish is on a "fishing trip" with he who claims that the fish he's been showing off in the town and selling to other townspeople have been caught by his ostensibly master skill of the trade.... they'll start sweating and want out of there because what they really do is buy fish in bulk and pretend to have caught it and even sell it as their own catch. S'all good. People do this a lot with baked goods and meals... "homemade" and "from scratch" are sought after products because of their richness, "authenticity", freshness and overall wholesome factor. That said, there's nothing wrong with taking fish from anyone if that's the way to your meal right now, nothing! But there's a great deal of denial and resistance present when you pretend to have been fishing but have really been collecting fish that others have caught and living off them... life will lead you to the choice over and over again to fish... and you will have to learn and life is giving you all you need to do that at your own pace and in the way that you can enjoy it most! I see this a lot in those that practice Spiritual principles. Sometimes pretending you fish can make an "easy" conversation with someone, I get that. But I mean, I don't recommend it. It's harder in the long run. Why not just fish. Why not just take what you have learned and catch your own wisdom. Why not find out how these principles work on a greater level by demonstrating them to yourself on one. And you will know you're a real fisherman when you don't shake and shit your pants when there's no catch left. You know what to do. And you'd never be concerned about shortage because you know how to create more --how to fish. As you get really good at it you can innovate and be intelligent and wise on the fly --a fly fisherman indeed! This is the ability that lets you really taste the zest of life! Point in case is that if you know you're not fishing... if you know that you're confused, that you are buying fish and not really understanding how to reel in your own..... practice fishing. Buying fish and reselling or stocking up isn't what you want and is not going to satisfy you ultimately. Life will help you to see that, just watch. You'll go up and down/have fish and not have fish/up and down/fish and no fish until you decide to have fish. And you have to fish for yourself. Abraham says: "There is nothing that you cannot be or do or have." And I agree. You're in agreement too when you really feel it and you're displaying it thru your example, by your attitude, your clarity, your enthusiasm, your vigor, your synchronicity and ultimately your Knowing. Everything else you want fills in around all of that. Fish will then literally jump into your boat. AMEN!
